Abstract

The media have been responsible, over the years, for propagating an erroneous idea of the «perfect body» and for creating stereotypes and beauty ideals far removed from society itself. The vast majority of young people believe that success arises through beauty and that it ends up shaping individual happiness. The problem appears when people who seek to achieve this aesthetic ideal do not take into account that, to reach it, they end up putting their health at risk and may end up developing an eating behavior disorder.Eating disorders are serious illnesses that affect more and more women (1 in 20 women between the ages of 12 and 21 suffers from an eating disorder-Cofares Foundation and FITA), and which must be treated and detected early. For this, it is very important that the media play a role of raising awareness and not be carried away by sensationalism, so that people do not believe that everything they see on online and offline platforms is real.

The knowledge of the general population about eating disorders is deficient, because, as with other mental pathologies, misinformation, prejudices and stereotypes are mixed without delving into the roots of the disease. Due to this great lack of knowledge about TCAs, I have decided to investigate in order to see what is the role played by some media -specifically the women’s and fashion magazines Cosmopolitan and Vogue and the online platform of Instagram-, when informing about these mental illnesses and to see if there are similarities or differences between one medium and the other.

The methodological design has been documentary type, in which the documentary sources have been consulted and selected in an orderly and systematic way in order to analyze and compare the information disseminated to validate, modify, complete or perfect the knowledge already accumulated.

Regarding the results obtained from the analysis of the news in both media during these months, the same conclusion has been reached. Half of the informative content warns of the seriousness and risk of having an eating disorder, while the remaining content promotes certain diets, the modification of eating habits without taking into account the body of each individual, often leading to obsessive behavior – compulsive and sick.

The media should take advantage of their influence and the role they play within society to serve as a link between specialized knowledge and the rest of the population that is unaware of these pathologies. The contradictions that have been shown with the research only lead to a greater number of uninformed people and away from the problem that affects more and more young people and that ends up dragging the rest of their lives. An informed society has a lower risk of getting sick. The role of the media at this point is essential.
